Secret 1: The 8 Lady Liberties!

Yes, you’ve heard about the big Statue of Liberty at the Ile Aux Cygnes, maybe even another one or two in Paris. But there are at least eight. The smallest one I mentioned in the show is on the chest of a centaur statue at 2 Place Michel Debré, 75006. You can read my story about all eight statues, and how to find them, here.

Secret 2: The 800-year-old carpark

OK that title is a little misleading. It’s a carpark wall made from 800-year-old stones. But the story is too cool to gloss over. This car park is built along the line of the Philippe Auguste Wall, which encircled Paris for centuries. Be sure to go another floor down in the carpark for an even better view through plexiglass – it’s like a museum down there! I’ve tracked the entire wall, here’s more information.

Address: 27 Rue Mazarine, 75006 Paris

Secret 3: Hidden park in the seventh

You’ll have to search for the Square Roger-Stéphane, a park in the 7th arrondissement, because it’s unlikely that you’ll find it by accident. But when you make it you’ll be rewarded, it’s an oasis beauty – especially if you’re there in spring or summer where you’ll find Japanese lilacs, rhododendrons, magnolias, periwinkles, honeysuckle, and heather.

Address: 7 Rue Juliette Récamier, 75007 Paris

Secret 4: The hidden hotel bar

Find the Hotel Particulier in Montmartre – if you can! You’ll have to ring a buzzer and convince the responder that you’re a guest or a customer. The easiest way to do this, of course, is to actually book a table or a room 🙂 My tip is to have brunch there, which is a little pricey for Paris but you may be rubbing shoulders with a celeb from one of the very few hotel rooms upstairs. The cocktail bar downstairs is particularly impressive too. Even the locals don’t know about this one!

Address: 23 Avenue Junot Pavillon D, 75018 Paris

Secret 5: The huge animals in the Paris waters

This is less of a tangible secret to visit, and perhaps more of a warning. There are enormous animals swimming in the Paris waterways. Last summer I saw a gigantic catfish pulled out of the water near the Eiffel Tower. A fisherman told me had caught another by the Louvre that was 2.1 metres long (that’s six foot eleven). That’s about the size of Shaquille O’Neal. And a few years ago, an elderly Parisian lady told me she released a crocodile in the Canal Saint Martin. I shudder to think how big it might be today – but the story formed the basis of my new children’s book: Kylie the Crocodile in Paris.
