Life in Paris as a Moulin Rouge dancer

Meet Canadian Allie Goodbun, a Moulin Rouge dancer who has gained a huge following online sharing the behind the scenes of her Paris life. She’s this week’s guest on The Earful Tower podcast, where she speaks of how she got the job, her life in Montmartre, and her love for the City of Light.

That’s her pictured above, right in the middle, as photographed by Philippe Wojazer.

What is it like to dance at the Moulin Rouge?

The dancers at the Moulin Rouge train to learn the choreography over the course of two to three weeks for multiple parts in the show. Allie said on the podcast that “there’s not only choreography onstage but there is choreography backstage. You need to know your cues, your exits, you have to make sure you’re not in other people’s way and – if you’ve ever seen the Moulin Rouge – the costumes are massive, so you just have to be in the right spot at all times”.

How does it feel go on stage at the Moulin Rouge?

“It’s the best thing ever,” says Allie. “You don’t really realise how big the audience actually is at our theatre, it holds over a thousand people and we do two shows a night. But it’s an intimate theatre and we can see the people’s faces.”

She adds that the ideal audience member is visibly into the show, and participating via whoops and cheers. The dancers feed off the energy, she says.

With that in mind, we practically lost our voices when we saw the wonderful show ourselves, last week.

  1. Another winner episode!
In 2001 😳, a group of us had a terrific evening at the Moulin Rouge. We had dinner (mediocre, but OK, and I’ve had worse in Paris, and the extra time allowed us the pleasure of dancing before the show). And what a show!! The music, the costumes, the dancers, and the total production were great fun.
