Nine great Paris museums, each devoted to one iconic artist

Paris is packed with museums, from the famous Louvre to quaint Marais gems. Yet, hidden amongst these museums are several dedicated to specific, individual people. Explore these nine unique Parisian museums which offer a glimpse into the worlds of these iconic figures.

1. Maison de Victor Hugo

This was the home of perhaps France’s most well-known writer – and it’s free to enter. A recent renovation returned it to look as it did during Victor Hugo’s time. Don’t miss the cafe and its spacious courtyard on the way out into the stunning Place des Vosges. Address: 6 Pl. des Vosges, 75004

More to find in the 4th arrondissement.

2. Giacometti Institute

This charming little museum showcases the world’s largest collection of works by Alberto Giacometti, including sculptures, drawings, paintings, photographs and objects by the artist. Address: 5 Rue Victor Schoelcher, 75014 Paris

More to find in the 14th arrondissement.

3. Musée Bourdelle

This is a sculpture museum showcasing the work of Antoine Bourdelle and it’s rather impressive. Some of the sculptures are huge! We once did an unusual photoshoot here (find the full story in our podcast all about the 15th district and sneak a glimpse at the shoot below). Address: 18 Rue Antoine Bourdelle, 75015

More to find in the 15th arrondissement.

4. Musée Clemenceau

Featuring perhaps the best wooden desk you’ll find in Europe, this museum is the former home of Georges Clemenceau, a man who was the French prime minister, a writer, and a huge fan of the arts. A tastefully curated museum, and likely to be quite empty. Address: 8 Rue Benjamin Franklin, 75016

More to find in the 16th arrondissement.

5. Musée Rodin

This is quite simply one of the loveliest museums in the whole of France. It’s the former workshop of sculptor Auguste Rodin and the stunning building houses an enormous collection of his work. The gardens are sheer perfection too, a mix of famous statues (like The Thinker) and beautiful plants, trees, and flowers. Do not miss this museum. Check out its Instagram page here. Address: 77 Rue de Varenne, 75007

More to find in the 7th arrondissement.

6. Maison de Balzac

An extremely rare combination in Paris of garden and a home-turned-museum dedicated to the famous French writer, whose infamous sculpture by Auguste Rodin can be found in the Rodin museum above. Bonus: Eiffel Tower views and a cute cafe on site. This museum is cool even if you don’t know anything about Honoré de Balzac. Don’t miss his cane and the sketches from Picasso. Address: 47 Rue Raynouard, 75016

More to find in the 16th arrondissement.

7. Dalí Museum

If you’re a fan of Salvador Dalí, this is the museum for you. You can even buy one of his lithographs downstairs. However, full disclosure, if you only have time for one museum in this neighbourhood, begin with the Musée de Montmartre around the corner. Address: 11 Rue Poulbot, 75018

More to find in the 18th arrondissement.

8. Musée National Picasso

There’s probably nowhere better on earth to see the work of Picasso, and what a setting too! Located in the Hotel Salé, constructed by a wealthy tax collector, this incredible museum is a must-see for art fans, with a well-curated look into the work and the life of Pablo Picasso. (Hear our 2020 interview with the museum’s curator here). Check out its Instagram page here. Address: 5 Rue de Thorigny, 75003

More to find in the 3rd arrondissement.

9. Musée Eugène Delacroix

And lastly… Delacroix is something of a hero of the 6th arrondissement. This recently-renovated museum is in his old home, complete with workshop and garden out the back. You can also find some of the artist’s masterpieces in the nearby Saint Sulpice church, and a fountain in his honour in the Luxembourg Gardens. Check out the museum’s Instagram page here. Address: 6 Rue de Furstemberg, 75006

More to find in the 6th arrondissement.

That’s all for now, happy exploring!
